Puppy Selection
Puppy selection seems so easy and straightforward, doesn't it? Yet, this is where bad matches between owners and pets often begin. Why would I say that?
Think about it, haven't you noticed how many pets resemble and act like their owners. It is uncanny sometimes! It can be humorous, yes, but seriously don't you think that there is a reason for this?
These people obviously took care in their choice of pet partners. They found the best pet for their personality and traits. I would even believe the animals and owners start looking like eachother.
The best thing that you can do in puppy selection is study the breed, the parents, and the environment that a pet is bred, born, and raised into. This will tell you much about the owners, the temperament of the parents, the way the animals are handled when young and impressionable. Many great puppies have been ruined by bad handling when young.
I bought an Afghan Hound of champion stock one time and it wasn't until a year later when he was so traumatized he was scared of his own tail that I got the real truth out of the breeders. I pressed them and found out that the person who cared for the kennel where the dog was raised was mentally unstable with schizophrenic tendencies. This led to this poor dog not trusting anyone. It literally ruined him for showing.
This is no exaggeration. You must match the dog to your personality and lifestyle. Pay attention to how much the owner cares about animals. Don't be afraid to ask tough questions. This is a big committment you are making!
