Dog Breeders

When it comes to dog breeders, there are many considerations before deciding to breed your dog. If they are pure bred dogs you must consider lineage, and how closely related they are. In some breeds this can be a serious consideration. It can lead to very undesireable traits coming out of the breeding process when a line is inbred heavily.

You must also consider the temperament of the dogs being bred. Puppies can often take after one or both of their parents when it comes to temperamemnt. The old saying that "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" can be very true even with dogs. Some dog breeders really have no concept of the responsibility that they have taken on.

Do you really know the line of the dogs that the dog breeders are offering? Have you spent enough time around him or her to get a feel for the temperament. Have you observed the dog around kids? The question is do you really know what you are getting yourself into? Even more importantly, you are not doing anyone any favors by bringing seriously inbred dogs into the world. Any quality breeder would have little problem with you wanting to get to know their dogs.

Undeniably, they just become somebody elses problem at some point in time. This can involve great amounts of heartache. A personal experience will illustrate this. At one time I bred and raised Afghan Hounds. These are beautiful dogs, amazing runners, and hunters. I had a beautiful silver blue male who was somewhat inbred. He seemed very nice and calm most of the time.

Looks were deceptive however, as he grew up he displayed more and more fear of humans. Any kind of loud noise or crowd situation would make him cower in fear. Even though he was from a line of national champion dogs, it became painfully obvious that he would never be show quality. We were fine with this as we loved the dog. The problems came a little later when his fear turned to reaction. He began biting anyone who made any sudden noise around him.

This became serious when he bit one of our young sons out of fear. After consulting his breeder, I was informed that this particular line had produced the line of champions through very selective breeding. This had brought out the best, and unfortunately, in his case, the worst in the breed. He had also
had some negative experiences with his handler at a young age which manifested itself later. These traits were not disclosed to us at the time of purchase.

I had to make a heartbreaking decision with regard to him. It was obvious that he would never fit into any situation due to this trait. To put him down was the hardest decision I have ever made. I love my animals. In the end though, I really felt it was the best thing for him. I felt he would be abused in any situation I could think of because of this trait.

Why do I tell you this sad tale? It is a cautionary tale not to practice close dog breeding practices if you decide to breed dogs at some time. Be careful. You may cause some- one else great pain by your own decisions?

I will tell you that I have had great success in training most bad habits out of my dogs because of the dog training information shown above.
