Dog Breed
Not every dog breed is created equally. Every breed has it's own pecularities and tendencies. I didn't believe this until I chose mini-dachsunds as my breed of choice many years ago. Let me tell you what I learned, it may help you.
I noticed that everyone that I talked to had a terrible time house training this breed, it took literally four to five years before you could completely trust this breed of dogs to not mess your nice house up.
Fortunately, these dogs are smart enough to overcome what is an obvious natural problem with this breed. Consider their body structure. I now believe that they literally have no where to store the waste for long periods of time. To compensate for this I decided to take advantage of their superior intelligence.
I trained my dog Gracie to tell me in no uncertain terms when she needed to go out. How did I do this with this sometimes stubborn breed? I watched her carefully for a period of days and I noticed a certain nervousness would come over her just before she had to go to the bathroom. I made it a point to time it, and let her out immediately upon noticing this trend. I then reinforced the good behavior when she did go.
Whithin a few weeks this seemingly stubborn breed of dog was going regularly. Upon realizing that she needed to go out every two hours because of lack of storage room in that compact body, I made sure that she got out every two hours minimum. The result?
We have no more accidents anytime. I also realized that this dog would not be a good fit for someone who was away every day for long periods of time. This explained why some friends with these dogs could never get them trained!
This may sound like a simple minded story but it illustrates the point that certain dog breeds belong with certain types of people.
